The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra set a new speed record at the Nürburgring circuit in Germany, following its prototype's impressive performance last October.
The SU7 Ultra production model broke the lap record on its first challenge at the Nürburgring circuit, becoming the fastest production electric vehicle (EV) in the circuit's history, Xiaomi founder, chairman, and CEO Lei Jun announced this today on Weibo.
The SU7 Ultra achieved a lap time of 7:04.957 under the driving of race car driver Vincent Radermecker, surpassing the previous record of 7:07.55 set by the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT in September 2023, according to Lei.
"I believe this record will be broken again in the near future," Lei wrote on Weibo.
The image he shared shows that the SU7 Ultra achieved this result on April 1.
Xiaomi launched the SU7 electric sedan on March 28, 2024, positioning it as a competitor to Tesla's (NASDAQ: TSLA) Model 3.
In October 2024, the SU7 Ultra prototype completed the Nürburgring circuit challenge with a lap time of 6:46.874, making it the fastest four-door car on the track.
The production version of the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra was launched in late February, featuring a maximum power output of 1,548 Ps, making it one of the most powerful EV models on the Chinese market.
The SU7 Ultra has a starting price of RMB 529,900 ($73,740), which is 2.5 times the starting price of the standard SU7 model at RMB 215,900.
On March 2, Lei said that the number of firm orders for the SU7 Ultra had reached 19,000 units, with over 10,000 units locked in, surpassing the annual target of 10,000 orders ahead of schedule.
Over the past two months, Xiaomi had faced criticism over the SU7 Ultra, including issues such as the lack of ventilation in the front hood and disputes over power restrictions for the model. These discussions have gradually subsided this month.
Following the SU7 series, Xiaomi is set to launch its first electric SUV (sport utility vehicle), the YU7, to cater to a broader range of preferences.
Xiaomi unveiled the YU7 on May 22, with the official launch scheduled for July. Pricing details have not yet been disclosed.
